Potable water of the local municipality utility is generally set neutral as regards its calcium carbonate corrosiveness. Thus, this does not have a sedimentation effect in case of low temperatures and corrosive effect on well passivated material surfaces. However, further preventive measures at the waterworks are generally not taken into account and the decision on this with the option of a corrective treatment is left to the consumer.

Water in the average hardness range, however, contains a distinct tendency of building scales with increase in temperature without an adequate protective layer in case of installations of normal steel, galvanized steel or non-ferrous metal. Supplementary corrosion protective measures gain special importance particularly during and after the start-up of new facilities or system sections.
